Exploring the Malay Tradition of Akar Ritual in Bali
Indonesia's Malay tribe has some unique cultural traditions, and among them is the tradition of Akar. This tradition is prevalent in Borneo Islands and is traditionally carried out by men and women who are about to get married. Akar is a ritual that uses a combination of spices and steam to cleanse the body and get rid of bad luck. In this blog post, we will delve deeper into the significance of Akar.
Akar : A Tradition Passed Down Through Generations The Malay tribe has passed down the tradition from generation to generation. This cleaning and purification ritual involves using a variety of herbs and spices that are boiled and used to create steam. The soon-to-be-wed couples sit on a stool while the steam from the herb and spice mixture envelops them. The Akar ritual is aimed at cleansing the body's pores, removing body odor, and even repelling bad luck. For the Malay community, the Akar ritual is an essential part of the pre-wedding celebration.
The Reason Behind the Spices Used in Akar The spices used in the Akar ritual serve two purposes. Firstly, they make the soon-to-be-wed couples' bodies smell good. Secondly, the spices have medicinal properties that offer added benefits. Common ingredients in a Akar mixture include jawe root, mesuik, and pucok ganti and more. These ingredients have traditionally been used to cleanse and purify the body and also offer relief from certain ailments. The use of these ingredients is both practical and meaningful, highlighting the Malay community's focus on holistic health and wellbeing.
The Procedure of Akar The Akar ritual requires a woven rattan hood, tepak bara (a device used to create smoke / steam machine ), wooden chair to sit, covering cloth, and of course, the spice and roots mixture. The procedure involves creating a smoke-filled steam chamber created by placing the tepak bara and the spice mixture underneath the Rattan hood. The soon-to-be-wed couples then sit on a stool in front of the steam chamber and are enveloped by the smoke and steam. The process lasts for approximately 30 minutes and concludes with a shower or bath to cleanse the body of any remaining spice residue.
The Cultural Significance of Akar The Malay community places great importance on the Akar ritual. The pre-wedding ceremony is a time for the families to come together and celebrate the couple's union, with Akar being an essential part of this celebration. Beyond the practical benefits of cleansing and purifying the body, the Akar ritual also symbolizes purification of the soul, representing the couple's readiness to start a new life together.
The culture and traditions of the Malay tribe are unique and fascinating, and Akar is just one example of their rich heritage. This tradition of purification and cleansing, using a mixture of herbs and spices, offers practical and symbolic benefits. Additionally, Akar is just one way the Malay community comes together to celebrate the union of two individuals. As Indonesians continue to embrace modernity, it is essential to remember these cultural traditions and rituals, which reflect the past and offer insights into Indonesia's rich cultural heritage.
